Boys Establishing Status in Junior School without Competitive Sport (ePrint - 20-25mins)
Citation: Swain, J; (2002) The Resources and strategies boys use to establish status in a junior school without competetive sport. Discourse: Studies in the Cultural Politics of Education , 23 pp. 91-107. 10.1080/01596300220123060
Abstract: This paper examines how boys aged 10-11 at an English junior school, where competitive sports are prohibited, developed masculine identities. Despite the school's anti-competitive policies, physical ability and athleticism still strongly shaped the way games were organized. These activities, which emphasized speed, skill, force, fitness, and strength, still contributed to the early formation of masculinity among the students.

Citation: Booth, R. J., Cope, E., & Rhind, D. J. A. (2024). Crossing the line: conceptualising and rationalising bullying and banter in male adolescent community football. Sport, Education and Society, 29(6), 758–773. https://doi.org/10.1080/13573322.2023.2180498
Abstract: The study examines how bullying can be hidden under the guise of banter and explores what constitutes bullying, drawing on the perspectives of coaches and players about social norms, regarding what constitutes a joke, or humor that ‘crosses a line’ with players on a team. The research provides examples of how bullying and masculinity are often normalized, such as masking hurtful comments about a player’s performance as acceptable behavior. Researchers highlight factors that contribute to bullying, such as emphasizing the repetition and harm of negative behaviors, expressions of aggression, power imbalances, targeting those who are seen as physically or socially weaker, and the intent behind these actions.

British Journal of Sports Medicine 10.1136/bjsports-2023-107562
Abstract: This study discusses the effects of physical activity on people experiencing homelessness (PEH). The article explores sport interventions and various types of physical activities—such as outdoor exercise, adventure training, hiking, and soccer—that impact positive mental health outcomes. Participants (PEH) provide insights related to their own experiences of homelessness and emphasize the importance of physical activity during this time. Within the article, sub-themes highlight how PEH develop self-esteem, confidence, and personal growth through physical activity interventions. In particular, participating in group activities such as soccer helps people experiencing homelessness feel a sense of belonging, especially given the instability of their social networks while living on the streets
